You might see Yakisoba sauce in many Japanese recipes and have trouble finding it. It's true, this sauce is not easy to find outside of Japan — but fear not, it's easy to make and only takes about 5 minutes.

What is Yakisoba-sauce?

If I had to describe the taste, I'd say it's somewhere between a spiced, smoky Worcestershire sauce and an extra-strong barbecue sauce. This sauce is not a light one — it's thick, sweet, and sour, not neutral in flavor at all, but it adds so much to the food. Personally, I'm addicted to this sauce. The most popular brand in Japan, and my personal favorite, is the Bulldog Tonkatsu sauce. It's great for Okonomiyaki, Yakisoba, and Takoyaki — and our homemade Yakisoba sauce will perform just as well as the store-bought one.

Questions & answers

Can I substitute the oyster sauce if I want to make this vegetarian?
Swap it for the same amount of hoisin sauce or a vegetarian oyster-style sauce — the flavor won't be identical but it'll still work great.
Can I make this ahead of time?
Absolutely — this sauce is basically built for make-ahead. Mix it, jar it, and it's ready whenever you need it.
Can I adjust the sweetness or saltiness?
Yes, that's exactly what the 'adjust seasoning if needed' step is for — add a little more sugar to sweeten or a splash more soy sauce to bring up the salt.
Do I need to cook the sauce or heat it at all?
Nope — just mix everything in a bowl, no heat required. The whole thing comes together in 5 minutes flat.
Can I scale this up to make a bigger batch?
Totally — all the ingredients are in tablespoon and teaspoon measurements, so just double or triple everything proportionally and store in a larger jar.
